Friday Five 02.11.11

Happy Friday! What are you up to this weekend? I’m hoping to have a clear out and get things more organized. I meant to do it in January but alas, it didn’t get done. It won’t be super fun but I’ll be glad when it’s finished! Plus, it’s partly out of necessity. I have some exciting news to share next week so stay tuned… Enjoy the Friday Five and have a lovely weekend!

Motoi Yamamato

Motoi Yamamoto creates these incredible installations out of salt! Absolutely amazing! His work is inspired by the death of his sister from brain cancer. He has channeled his grief by creating complicated labyrinths, very narrow tunnels, deteriorating staircases, etc. Yamamoto uses salt because of it’s association with death customs in Japan. Salt, to him, has become symbolic of life and it’s perpetual circle. Another interesting fact is when the exhibition is over, Yamamoto takes the salt from the installation and returns it to the sea. The circle of life once again. Pretty cool, huh?!

Interior Design Quiz

Stylish Home brings us Style Maker, “a visual quiz to define and defend your style.” They claim it’s like a “design fortune cookie.” There are 20 available style results and 8 questions where you choose a picture that best describes your preferred architecture, table setting, relaxing beverage, flooring, etc. After picking your favorites, you learn a few things about your “suspected” style result and three famous people who might share your similar aesthetic. Sounds fun, right?!

My result is:

“Park Avenue Cocktail”: Graceful living in a well appointed home. A kitchen that reflects your passion… large, sweeping – authentic. Hibiscus and an Ocean Breeze while you sleep. Like the painter’s brush, your composition is done in living color. Modern subtleties extend to your table. Relax in a contemplative way. Pre-war, upper east side attitude. A den of discussion for artists and intellectuals…

Other “Park Avenue Cocktail” suspects:

~ Marlene Dietrich
~ Audrey Hepburn
~ Frank Sinatra

Take the quiz here. What are your results? I’d love to hear!

The Way Back

Last week I saw The Way Back. Directed by Peter Weir, it is an inspiring tale of perseverance and comradery during WWII. The story follows some refugees who’ve escaped from a Siberian Gulag camp that walk over 4,000 miles to freedom in India. The refugees encounter incredible hardships but they work together and overcome them. The story is told through the viewpoint of a Polish POW played by Jim Sturgess. He was truly captivating. All of the performances were great but I particularly enjoyed those by Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, and Saoirse Ronan.

Here’s a trailer.

Friday Five 02.04.11

Happy Friday! Hopefully everyone has had a good week. What are your plans for the weekend? Are any of you watching the Super Bowl? I’m not a sports fan but a few of my friends entered a commercial contest for Doritos. Their ad, The Best Part, made the top five! After a month of voting, the three commercials with the highest votes will air during the Super Bowl! The winners find out during the game. Pretty exciting! So it looks like I might have to watch it. For moral support… Anyway, here are the Friday Five! Have a great weekend!

Tia Zoldan’s Hancock Park Home

Another brand-new online magazine, High Gloss, premiered yesterday! I love all these new sources for inspiration and all I can say is keep ‘em coming! One article that I really enjoyed was interior designer Tia Zoldan’s home in Hancock Park, Los Angeles. She has a casual, sophisticated style that incorporates influences from all over the world with pieces from different time periods. I love all the fantastic textures she uses. It gives the home warmth and personality which can sometimes be tricky with a mostly neutral color palette.

Kate + Sofia

I love these images of Kate Winslet and Sofia Coppola. There is something about them that draws you in. Maybe it’s their quiet sensibility or their effortless style. I’m not sure. I think they are beautiful.

The King’s Speech

I finally saw The King’s Speech over the weekend. It was a truly remarkable film about friendship, overcoming personal demons, and finding your voice. The King’s Speech is an inspiring journey of a leader that would inspire a nation.

Colin Firth plays the stammering Bertie who becomes King George VI. His performance was incredible. (Firth better win the Oscar for Best Actor.) He was strong, endearing, witty, and brave. A prime example of indomitable spirit. It was a joy to watch the friendship between Bertie and Lionel Logue, played by Geoffrey Rush. Logue was an unconventional speech therapist from Australia. He was a bit eccentric and occasionally would reach too far with his methods. What I liked about Logue was he never wavered. He knew what he needed to do and the way it needed to be done in order to achieve success. Helena Bonham Carter was fantastic as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. She was the witty, loving, and supportive wife to King George VI. Also, I think Timothy Spall did an excellent job with his portrayal of British Bulldog, Winston Churchill. He was gruff and compelling and even though his role in the film was a small one, he was very memorable.

There are many great things in The King’s Speech. The production design, cinematography, editing, etc. It’s message will leave you uplifted. I am glad that it has 12 Oscar nominations and I hope it wins Best Picture by a landslide. Have you seen it yet?
